November Curtain Trading: Stock, Lead Times and Customer Expectations

3 min read

By the time November arrives, a curtain shop can be juggling very different customers: someone refreshing a sitting room before visitors arrive, someone looking for a practical bedroom solution, and someone who simply wants to replace an old pair. The pressure isn't necessarily to carry more stock. It's to know what can be supplied, when, and with what information the customer needs before ordering.

Make availability visible to the whole team

A popular design is only useful if the required width, drop and heading can be supplied. Check availability by actual size and colour combination, not just by the name of the range. A single missing drop can turn a promising conversation into a disappointing one.

Keep a short, current list behind the counter of dependable lines, low-stock variants and alternatives. If staff can answer a sizing question without leaving the customer waiting, the whole buying experience feels more assured.

Separate 'in stock' from 'in time'

A customer preparing a room for a particular date may hear 'available' and assume 'arriving this week'. They are not the same promise. Confirm the supplier's current dispatch arrangements, delivery method and any seasonal cut-offs before committing to a date. Where timing is uncertain, explain that clearly rather than offering a reassuring guess.

For special orders, write down the agreed size, colour, heading and delivery expectation on the order record. A quick confirmation with the customer is easier than resolving a misunderstanding after the goods arrive.

Keep alternatives genuinely useful

When a customer's first choice is unavailable, avoid suggesting the nearest colour automatically. Ask which part of the choice matters most: the tone, the heading, the level of light control or the finished drop. A different design that meets the customer's main need may be a better recommendation than a near match that does not.

It helps to have a couple of complete hanging examples available. A neutral curtain can show how a fabric sits in a room, while a contrasting colour gives shoppers a useful comparison. The display should support the conversation, not dictate the choice.

Prepare for the questions that slow a sale

Keep a simple measuring guide at the counter and ask whether the customer has a pole or a track. Explain whether the pack width refers to each panel or the pair, and check the intended drop from the correct hanging point. If the customer has not measured, giving them a clear way to return with the right figures is better than encouraging an uncertain purchase.

Staff should also distinguish between product features and what the customer will experience at home. Room-darkening and thermal descriptions depend on the individual curtain, while gaps around the fitting affect the finished result. A measured explanation builds more trust than a blanket promise.

Use the month to learn what customers actually want

Keep a tally of enquiries that could not be fulfilled: missing sizes, colours requested, heading preferences and deadlines that could not be met. These notes are useful alongside sales figures. They reveal where demand is being lost, rather than only showing what happened to sell.

If one size keeps being requested, check whether it deserves more space in the next reorder. If customers repeatedly ask for a feature the shop does not stock, consider a sample or a targeted addition rather than expanding the entire range.

A practical November routine

At the start of each week, review key sizes, refresh any delivery information, tidy the display and brief the team on sensible alternatives. Then check what questions came up most often the previous week. These small routines make the shop easier to buy from when customers are working to a deadline.

For examples of different ready-made looks, see Tivoli Natural at https://www.tyrone-group.com/product-page/tivoli-natural and Dallas Green at https://www.tyrone-group.com/product-page/dallas-green. Always check the specific product options and current availability before advising on a purchase.

November trading doesn't need a complicated formula. Customers want a curtain that fits their room, arrives when they need it and matches what they were told. Good stock information and careful conversations help deliver all three.
